About the Event

ABOUT THE ABINGDON HEAD

Abingdon Head of the River

Re-established in 1961 after the old club had initially ceased in 1878. It is a time-trial rowing race event held annually on the river Thames in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Traditionally, it is the last Head of the British Rowing winter heads season and it takes place in mid-April usually around the Easter break. With more daylight and summer clock time in April, Abingdon Head can accommodate up to 4 Divisions and allow a full day of racing on the beautiful stretch of the river Thames.
Raced over 2000m upstream course it provides the last chance to test winter rowing fitness build, technique and skills before going into the regatta's duels and multi-lane racing.

Head course

Start of the course is placed just a few hundred meters downstream of the Culham cut and "Danger" sign. From the start it is heading upstream towards the Abingdon town center. First kilometer is principally straight before coming to the Culham foot bridge on the right and Abingdon Marina Park on the left where the course goes into a more steering excessive S-band until the Abingdon School Boathouse. From there the river is again mainly straight for the final 750m with a finish line at green buoys before St. Helen's church in Abingdon town centre. Please consult the provided course map.

Boating

For boating and landing continue upstream through the Abingdon bridge and use the landing stages on the left river bank at Rye Farm Meadow just after the Nag's Head island (image below).
