Rowing is a unique sport. The power, strength and endurance required are fairly obvious - and new people do develop all of these . More challenging though are the skills to get the technique right, that you only really appreciate when you have been out on the water. The basic movements can be grasped in a few weeks - perfecting those movements takes a lifetime. Being part of a team of people, learning these skills in the fresh air is a very rewarding experience.
Sessions are held in the evenings during the summer months and on Saturday and Sunday mornings all year round.
We offer a less common set-up of Racing and Recreational squads, which are not split by gender or Masters level. We believe that this widens opportunities and forms a stronger club community.
If you have rowed before, or if you would like to learn a superb all-round sport that is fun, challenging, sociable and rewarding, please contact us to arrange a visit- you are more than welcome to come and join us.

Want to learn?

The club runs an adult beginner course in early Summer to provide people with a taster in rowing and the basic skills required to take part in the sport recreationally or competitively.
After completing a course, new members are encouraged to join the recreational squad for a few months to consolidate their skills. From there, they can ask to join the racing squad, or continue to row recreationally, as they prefer.

Racing Squad

The racing squad is aimed at those who already have some experience sculling or rowing, who want to race, and who are keen to commit themselves to improving. The squad currently includes members who have been rowing for less than a year, as well as those who have been rowing for over 40!

The squad naturally splits into Senior/Masters for racing, but crews regularly train together as appropriate, and race as Open, Women and Mixed.

We understand that people have many commitments, and so have no strict rules on number of sessions attended - attitude is most important. Sessions are run on a sign up basis, with coached double outings available on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as evening sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, either in the gym or on the river, depending on conditions.
We enter races roughly monthly, and have had success over the recent regatta season at several local level events including Ironbridge and City of Oxford.  Members race at all levels of competition, from national championships through to smaller local events.

Recreational Squad

Abingdon Rowing Club boasts a large recreational squad, comprising those who do not wish to race regularly, and those who have only just progressed from Learn to Row courses who are still building their skills.
Dedicated to enjoying themselves, the group welcomes rowers of all levels of experience and ability. The aim of the squad is to support individuals and crews who prefer to stay on our beautiful stretch of water with regular or occasional sessions, not racing but enjoying the activity, the companionship, the (occasional) tranquility and the (lively) wildlife. It keeps us fit, keeps us healthy and keeps the mind working.
Sessions are typically on a Saturday morning, although crews do also go out on Sunday and Wednesday mornings, as well as some weekend evenings. The recreational squad do occasionally race, especially at local events such as City of Oxford.

Juniors

Abingdon RC does not currently run a Junior squad.

If you are interested in rowing as a junior, the closest public clubs to Abingdon are Wallingford Rowing Club, City of Oxford Rowing Club, or Falcon Boat Club (based in Oxford), all of which have successful junior programmes. Clubs typically accept juniors from school Year 8.
